My favorite hugs are from my grandfather. He wraps me up and squeezes me tight where I can feel the prickly five ‘o clock shadow grazing the top of my head. His squeezes are bright smiles in hug form. I grew up in a family where hugs are common place so when I picked up this book, I knew I’d love it!
But would my little love it?
“I’m going to give you a bug hug. A wiggly wriggly, Makes you giggly, Creepy crawly snug hug.” – Cooney
I read Caroline B. Cooney’s, I’m Going To Give You A Bear Hug! to my 5 month old infant and it held her smile and gaze throughout the reading. Tim Warnes did a beautiful job of producing vivid colors and beautiful sketches of humans interacting with animals.
Cooney’s purpose was to help children wind down before bedtime. I didn’t read this book at bedtime because it uplifted my spirits. My voice rose with each rhyme. I felt it got my little one activated instead of sleepy. She is only five months old. I’m curious to know how it fares with older children at bedtime.
“I’m going to give you a dog hug. A knock over chairs, Chase up the stairs, And sleep like a log hug.” – Cooney
I’m Going To Give You A Bear Hug! had me running in place, opening up my arms, wrapping my sweet infant in a blanket, and skipping off with her in a bear hug.
The alliteration was on point. I didn’t find any tired clichés and although there was nothing fantastical about the book, it ballooned my imagination. None of the animals spoke, neither were they made up, but I had a fun time imagining a piggie giving me and my daughter great big squeezes.
Other than Warnes illustrations of a mother talking to her son, gender is not referenced in the writing leaving it wide open for interpretation and could be easily read to any gender.
“I’m going to give you a whale hug. A high tide, Ocean wide, Take me for a sail hug.” – Cooney
I hugged I’m Going To Give You A Bear Hug!. It’s a beautiful gem which can easily be passed on through generations. I would love to see this kind of book with a darker skinned Latino child and a Latina mami or papi. It is a delightful and gorgeous book. We will read it over and over for quite sometime in my home.
